Bromelain


Bromelain:
Bromelain (common name: pineapple enzyme) is found mostly in the stems of pineapples and is available as a dietary supplement which may reduce swelling and bruising. Bromelain also used in certain slimming pills. Germany has recently taken a keen interest in research bromelain, it is currently the 13 most widely used herbal medicine in Germany. It is active in a wide pH range and can operate in the acidic environment of the stomach. Bromelain can also help the body in its response to physical stress.
However, it does contribute to the digestion of proteins and can thus be used as a digestive aid. Bromelain is used to reduce edema (swelling), especially the nose and paranasal sinuses after surgery or trauma. It also is used to prevent muscle soreness after intense exercise. Bromelain may be safe for most people, if taken in appropriate amounts. Bromelain may cause some side effects such as diarrhea and gastrointestinal discomfort. Bromelain may cause allergic reactions, especially those people who have other allergies. If you have allergies, be sure to check with your doctor before taking bromelain.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not enough is known about the use of bromelain in pregnancy and lactation.
